Freshwater crocodiles are not generally aggressive, but will bite if disturbed or feel threatened. Please treat these animals with respect and caution.

Saltwater or estuarine crocodiles can grow to over 5 metres in length and have been responsible for a number of fatal attacks on humans in Australia. Their preferred habitat is the large tidal rivers closer to the coast although they can turn up in surprising places.

Saltwater crocodiles are dangerous and opportunistic predators and should be treated with extreme caution.

Please ensure you read all crocodile safety signs in the park and heed any warning signs near waterways.

Crocodile Safety in Kakadu

The waterways of southern Kakadu are mainly the preserve of the smaller and less dangerous of Australia's two crocodile species the Freshwater crocodile or Crocodylus johnstonii (Gumugen in local language).
